Finnish government takes initiative to support export of leading edge Finnish mobile technology
Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen and Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb open Brazilian government doors enabling Alekstra, fastest growing entrant in Finnish mobile operator services field to take giant leap towards being forerunner of virtual operator service in Brazil after the change of legislation allowing more competition in Brazilian telecommunications market. This was one of the concrete outcomes of the second largest business delegation in Finnish history taking place in mid February.
Technology developed by Alekstra enables large multinational enterprises to consolidate acquisition of their mobile phone services into one global platform instead of contracting directly with each operator in every country. Delivering significant cost saving on phone bill by service plan optimization and easing the transactional complexity of dealing with hundreds of different phone bill formats which are now processed through Alekstra’s global platform are the first steps towards global virtual operator eliminating astronomically high cost of using mobile phones outside home country, referred also as roaming.
Member of the business delegation, Outotec CEO, and a former Chief Technology Officer of Nokia, Pertti Korhonen comments Alekstra’s business to be truly revolutionary. Outotec, the world leading minerals and metals processing technology company operates in dozens of countries is one of the satisfied users of Alekstra’s platform. Mr. Korhonen told that for Outotec, with more than 60% of the phone bill on roaming, this is going the be next best thing after expansion of mobile phones. “Employee traveling and using phone outside home country can easily generate bill of thousands of euros just in few days. For Outotec Alekstra’s technology could mean cutting phone bill into half in three years.”
Alekstra CEO Toni Toikka tells about the importance of help from high level political influencers. Growing to be a global service provider in the highly regulated and protective mobile operator market requires political support. Alekstra has been able to expand to 12 countries so far but entering the fastest growing, high roaming cost markets like Brazil and China is challenging without the support of the highest political levels. “This kind of collaboration between business and politics has been one key factor behind many blooming international enterprises. This is easily forgotten over time therefore I wish to state my gratitude towards the Ministers for the support to the business delegation”.
